Different Ways to Hold Your Baby: A Guide for New Parents

Holding your newborn for the first time can feel both magical and nerve-wracking. Babies are more resilient than they look, but knowing the right techniques will help you feel confident and keep your little one safe and comfortable.

The Golden Rule: Always Support the Head

Until around 4 months, babies cannot support their own heads. Always ensure the head and neck are supported whenever you pick up or hold your baby.

How to Pick Up Your Baby

  1. Slide one hand under the head and neck
  2. Place your other hand under the bottom
  3. Lift slowly and bring baby close to your chest
  4. Adjust your hold once baby is secure

Common Holding Positions

1. Cradle Hold

The classic position — baby lies across your forearms with their head in the crook of your elbow. Great for feeding and soothing.

2. Upright / Shoulder Hold

Baby is held upright against your chest with their head resting on your shoulder. Excellent for winding after feeds and for babies who prefer to be upright.

3. Football Hold

Baby is tucked under your arm like a rugby ball, facing outward, with their head in your hand. Useful for breastfeeding and for babies with reflux.

4. Tummy Hold (Colic Hold)

Baby lies face-down along your forearm, with their head near your elbow and legs straddling your hand. The gentle pressure on the tummy can soothe wind and colic.

5. Hip Hold

Once baby has good head control (around 4–6 months), you can carry them on your hip facing outward. Great for curious babies who want to see the world.

When to Avoid Certain Holds

Never hold baby by the arms or hands alone — this can cause joint injury. Avoid any position where the head is unsupported or the airway could be restricted.
