Nappy changing might feel daunting at first, but with a little practice it becomes second nature. Newborns need changing up to 10–12 times a day — so you'll get plenty of practice!
What You'll Need
- Clean nappy
- Baby wipes (fragrance-free for newborns)
- Nappy cream or barrier cream
- A changing mat or clean, flat surface
- A spare change of clothes (just in case!)
Step-by-Step: How to Change a Nappy
- Lay your baby down safely on a changing mat. Never leave them unattended on an elevated surface.
- Open the dirty nappy and use the front of it to wipe away the bulk of any mess.
- Lift baby's bottom by gently holding both ankles and sliding the dirty nappy out from underneath.
- Clean thoroughly with baby wipes — always wipe front to back for girls to prevent infection.
- Apply nappy cream if needed, especially if there's any redness or nappy rash.
- Slide the clean nappy underneath, fasten the tabs snugly (but not too tight — you should be able to fit two fingers inside).
- Wash your hands thoroughly after every change.
Nappy Rash: Prevention and Treatment
Nappy rash is common and usually caused by prolonged contact with wet or soiled nappies. To prevent it: change nappies frequently, allow some nappy-free time each day, and use a barrier cream at each change. If rash persists or looks severe, consult your health visitor or GP.
Tips for Wriggly Babies
As babies grow, they become more mobile and changing can become a challenge. Keep a small toy nearby to distract them, sing a song, or make it a game. The key is to stay calm and make it a positive experience.
